social integration of waste pickers at the univar plant (montevideo, uruguay)
Category: Inclusive Business Assessment & Development
Goal: Training to Montevideo’s waste pickers in order to facilitate their integration into a formal job at the UNIVAR solid waste recycling plant.
Motivation: Montevideo’s new urban waste management system does not allow waste pickers to work in certain areas, but it is offering them alternatives to get a formal job in the sector. One of these alternatives is to be integrated into the Univar plant, a new waste management facility that will start operating during year 2016. Organización San Vicente is a local reputed entity that has been closely working with recyclers and has an accurate knowledge of their needs and challenges. R4S and Fundació Formació i Treball provide knowledge to technically support the starting of the operations of the new plant. By offering technical training to informal recyclers and managerial support, it is expected that the plant can be efficiently run by the end of 2016. R4S and Organización San Vicente are combining their respective knowledge to promote the integration of recyclers into the waste management sector; and more specifically into the management and operation of the Univar waste selection plan.
Impact / Expected Impact: It is expected that 41 new jobs will be created thanks to the opening of the Univar plant in Montevideo. The most important component of the project consists in achieving the proper integration of informal recyclers into a formal job, with their respective rights and duties.
Partners: Organización San Vicente, Fundació Formació i Treball, Municipality of Montevideo, Diputació de Barcelona.
Execution period: 2015-2016
