INFORMAL RECYCLERS INCLUSION MODELs IN SUCRE (bOLIVIA)
Category: Inclusive Business Assessment&Development
Goal: Creation of two new recyclers associations in the city of Sucre and support the consolidation of two other existing ones. Development of a handbook with best practices for the replication of urban waste informal recyclers social and labor inclusion projects.
Motivation: The existence of two recyclers associations in Sucre and the preliminary evaluation of their performance up to date draw to the conclusion that additional associations can be created to integrate more informal reyclers and improve their living standards. In addition, there are clear signs of the improvement potential the present synergies between organizations have, specially with regard to promoting their activity and creating public awareness. The project aims to provide the associations with key technical and management support to guarantee their viability and sustainability as municipal waste management companies.
Impact / Expected Impact: Even though existing recyclers associations in Sucre have improved their performance and income generation ability during the last years, their survival is still at risk. This way, external support tackling both social and technical aspects of the urban waste management are needed to strengthening the organizations' institutional capacity. This support will be given to the two existing recycling partnerships, and will be the base for the creation of the new associations. The creation of new associations is an important milestone of this project for R4S, because it is expected to impact on a workforce of about 80 people, mostly women. At the same time, this activity will serve as a critical basis for developing a manual of best practices for its replication, not only in Bolivia but in other countries within the region too.
