decent employment for waste pickers in sucre (bolivia)
Category: Inclusive Business Assessment&Development
Goal: Project evaluation and impact assessment to highlight the lessons learned in order to achieve the consolidation of waste pickers associations. Definition of a roadmap for the future work of the recyclers' associations.
Motivation: Identify and define the strategies developed during the implementation of the project under the main criterion for the future sustainability of the action; and identify the barriers that have limited the creation of formal and decent jobs, as well as the development of new inclusive business in the context of waste management in the area of Sucre (Bolivia).
Impact / Expected Impact: A group of 60 collectors were organized in two associations of collectors -80% of them were women-. As a result, they could exercise their social and economic rights of market access for recycling under the integrated management of municipal solid waste in the city of Sucre. Access to training in management and technical issues in waste management and market mechanisms lead to an increase of their revenues in 50% from the income obtained before joining the association. The project has also worked in the approach of staff of the municipality of Sucre to the recognition of this inclusive recycling activity. This aspect will be recognized (hopefully) later in time, so the municipality shall demonstrate that it has internalized what worked on this project.
