georgetown total recycling cooperative (guyana)
Category: Inclusive Business Assessment & Development
Goal: Assess the current development opportunities for inclusive recycling activities in Georgetown (Guyana), and develop a business plan for supporting the waste pickers’ “GT Recyclers” cooperative.
Motivation: Offer technical assistance to the recyclers as they transition into a formal and publicly recognized organization. To this end, this project has been designed to prepare a medium long- term sustainable path for the recycling activities in Guyana, with a specific focus on the recycling activities of the “GT Recyclers” at the new Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill, after the closure of the ancient landfill Le Repentir.
Impact: The waste pickers from Georgetown, with the Inter-American Development Bank external support and the cooperation of the Guyana Government, created a cooperative, but it requires external support to consolidate its growth and be recognized as a formal company in the recycling market. R4S conducted a market survey of recycled material in Guyana, in order to know all the possibilities of sale and recycling. As a result of this project, R4S will define a strategic action plan and business plan to strengthen the cooperative activities, which should enable better income for all recyclers affected by the closure of the landfill Le Repentir. The goal of this project is to improve the incomes of all recyclers affected by the closure of the Le Repentir dumpsite to levels equal or superior to those prior to the closure, while at the same time improving their living and working conditions.
